Biography

Pieter Van Alstyne was baptized 16 May 1736 in Muitzeskill or Kinderhook, New York. He was a son of Thomas Van Alstyne and Maria Van Alen.^[1]

In 1760 he married Marritje Conyn, daughter of Casperus Conyn and Hendrickje VanSchaick.^[1] Van Alstyne gives date of marriage as 17 September 1760 (apparently the date of the marriage license) and Claverack church records show the date as 3 December 1760.^[2] Eight children were born to the marriage: ^[3]

In his 1897 genealogical account of the Van Alstyne family, Lawrence Van Alstyne wrote of Pieter:^[4]

So far as my investigations have proved to the contrary Peter VanAlstyne and his whole family have vanished from off the face of the earth. I have written to others and others have written to me asking for information of this family and so far as I know no trace of them has been discovered. Peter was baptized at Muitzeskill but his children were all baptized at Kinderhook except the youngest who was baptized at Athens. Peter was given the homestead farm by his father in his will dated Nov 15 1760; in October 1787 this farm was sold to Peter VanNess. According to the map accompanying the old parchment deed it contained 678 acres. The Kinderhook Creek ran along the northwest side and a road leading to VanAlstyne's mill bounded it on the west. The Post road leading to Albany crossed it about the center running north and south. He and his brother Lambert married sisters and the mystery about Peter is made more mysterious because of the fact that one of Lambert's descendants has made diligent search for a clue to this missing family and at last accounts had met with no success.
